Everyone loves a great animal story! Especially kids! Children are also intrigued by things that stand out from what they have learned to be “normal.” So what better book with which to amaze a child than Unlikely Friendships for Kids by Jennifer Holland? How about a three book series of them!

The Monkey & the Dove, The Dog & The Piglet, and The Leopard & the Cow make up a wonderful trio of stories about some Unlikely Friendships within the Animal Kingdom. Each book is written for readers ages 7 and up, and shares five incredible stories that the author has collected and confirmed from all over the world. The end of the book also contains a list and description of the animals, as well as a “words and phrases” list to encourage children to look up information that may be unclear to them.

I particularly loved having three books in this hardback series because I could hand one to each of my three older children. They had a blast reading the stories out loud to each other and trying to out-do the other: “The dog and the pig were cute, but leopards actually EAT cows!” It was a great way to give them all something that was similar yet different, and with such a fun variety of animals that no one could decide which book was the best – all of them were amazingly fun reads that included both domestic and wild animals (sometimes as pairs).

Not only did Holland give her young readers fun stories to connect to, but Unlikely Friendships for Kids also contain gorgeous photography. “Look Mom! This kitty looks like my Angel-kitty!” “Awe, look at them cuddle!” “Whoa! The cat is licking the iguana!” As a teaching parent, this excitement and chatter over books is wonderful music to my ears! Who needs more TV time? They had more fun interacting over these books than sitting on the sofa and staring silently ahead.

Jennifer Holland’s Unlikely Friendships for Kids is a must have for young readers! Now I will have to find the one she wrote for adults!
