throne of lies book coverReviewed by Jessa Larsen

Princess Amythesta is on the horizon of her 18th birthday and has absolutely no patience for the requirements and duties delegated to her as the princess of Northwinds. Currently betrothed to a horridly behaved highborn, she truly dreams to be free of her royal duties, but at what cost?

As Amythesta pushes the boundaries and vexes her parents thoroughly, she finds herself entangled in secrets and heartbreak. Will she be able to accept her duties as the royal heir to the throne? Or will she find true love and unexpected freedom? Only time will tell.

I must admit I’m not fully familiar with the author, Sara Secora, but from a blind, untarnished perspective, I would make the assumption that this is her first book. When I first started reading it, I didn’t expect very much and it came across as unnecessarily flowery, using an immense amount of adjectives to “paint the picture” for her readers.

As I continued reading, I was hooked. I would say it took me to about the 1/3 mark to get her and, as I looked back, I could see an improvement in the writing style. Sara Secora got the point across without making me read five paragraphs. The characters developed nicely and I was able to immerse myself in the story.

The book seemingly takes quite a bit of time to get going into anything particularly interesting, but once I realized/remembered that it was meant to be a trilogy, I came to the conclusion that Sara gave us the perfect cliff hanger. When I first started reading, I didn’t anticipate any further interest, but once I got to the end, I found myself eager to read the next book in line.

Throne of Lies is the perfect combination of fantasy and mystery with intriguing characters. It takes a left turn just when you thought you’d figured out the “predictable plot line. Definitely a book I recommend for your next fun fantasy read. Perfect for any children getting started in the genre.
