Review: The Mommy Files by Jen Klein
The Mommy Files by Jen Klein is written for new moms as well as experienced mothers who simply want to learn more about their babies. The author has not forgotten anything. She begins at the first moment that the pregnancy is discovered, and move along to when the child is independent and ready to explore the world on his or her own.
The book reminds new mothers that they can’t do it all, and should not be so hard on themselves when they come home with their new babies from the hospital. The Mommy Files provides information on working outside of the home, developing a network of other mothers through playgroups, and time management skills. Klein also emphasize that it is important to create time for oneself as a new mom, and that this is often put aside, because new mothers are naturally absorbed with their babies.
The Mommy Files offers simple advice for managing it all, and shares “She Knows Secrets” for the reader to note when waiting for the birth and managing the hectic days afterwards. For example, the author speaks in authoritative voice on the issue of cosleeping and discipline, and the readers will get many sides of the issue from the book so that they can make the best decision for their families.
After a decade of working in several NYC law departments and teaching, Poppy decided she enjoyed writing full-time. She currently works as a freelance writing consultant, and lives with her husband and sons on the East Coast.

I’ll have to look for this one. Thanks for the review.

As a NICU baby nurse, books about babies are part of my regular reading routine. Even though I am not usually dealing with babies over 2 months old, I am always needing the answers to what to do with the baby questions. Plus sometimes I read the most wonderful books with advice I can use in the NICU like ‘The Happiest Baby on the Block’ and ‘The Baby Whisperer’. So even though my baby is thirty something, I would read this book.
I wish someone would have told me that is okay to dislike your new baby in the first couple weeks. Here you are getting very little sleep, at the beck and call of a 8 pound terror and everyone else is like “Oh, how sweeeeet. Gee, I miss having a newborn.”
If this is a book of practical advice, I’m all for it. I wish I had tried to do less that first month. I remember I baked cookies and delivered them to the hospital for the nurses just four days after I was released. What was I thinking?

On behalf of nurses everywhere, thanks for the cookies Jen.
And no, I do not believe it is ever okay to dislike your new baby.

Sharon,
Thank you for the blog compliment!
I should clarify – I loved my baby, but I didn’t always like him. It was really hard to adjust to the new sleep schedule and his demands. Not that I’m trying to get you to agree with me, but just so you will understand what I meant by my comment.
My sister-in-law is pregnant so I think this would be a great gift for her! My son is five now, but I know I would have loved this book when I was pregnant with him. It is good to read as much as you can about babies when pregnant (in my opinion) because then you can filter the information to see what fits your parental style the best (or what you envision your parental style to be…sometimes that changes when the little babes actually get here
).
I’ll be getting this book for my sister
I love the SheKnows books since they provide good information in a manageable way.
This sounds like a great book for new mothers-probably the best advice is to remember to take time for yourself. I think as women for some reason we feel that we have to do it all-the reality of it is very few of us can do absolutely everything well all the time. If I could just learn to follow this advice.
My favorite sections happen in the middle of the book with The Mommy Mafia and Playgroups are for Moms not Children.
So funny and true!
Playgroups are definitely for Moms!

Congrats Laura!
That’s a super-cute cover; fits with the title/premise very well
Sounds like an informative read. So many of my friends have started poppin’ out babies (some of them on ‘multiples’ now!), and almost every one of them has said it was nothing like she was told/expected … Sounds like a book like this should be in the hands of every expecting mother! Answer some of those “what on earth???” questions that arise …
Hello! I browsed through this book before Poppy reviewed it and will be getting it for a few of my friends who are expecting. It was just very straight forward no-nonsense advice and I’m sure time strapped moms would appreciate it!
I’m thinking it’d be a good baby-coming gift
Gotta file that away and remember it at the time!
