Many of us are unaware of the dangers of sugar, even sugar addiction, and all of the effects that can have lasting impacts on our body, mind and health. There are even times where sugar is hidden in every day foods and consumers are completely unaware of how much sugar they are really taking in. Author Cherie Calbom completely breaks down the dangers of sugars and also provides a path for eliminating the hold that sugar has in our lives.
This book is not for anyone that is looking for a quick fix for their health problems or for a new way to lose weight fast. While Calbom’s plan will ultimately help restore the natural order of the body off sugar, this not a get slim fast trick or a miracle cure all. She provides detailed history and scientific evidence and facts on sugar, the chemical breakdowns, the problems an addiction can cause and so much more. The author reflects on sugar’s links to various diseases and health issues that cover a wide range of physical and mental ailments. There are strict rules and guidelines that must be followed in order to “get off sugar” so to speak, starting with an initial one-month detox of absolutely no sugar of any kind. Calbom also provides a wide variety of easy recipes for her famous juices, various healthy alternatives and even tasty desserts. The book is well researched, easy to follow and full of very helpful information.
For readers that do not think that completely eliminating sugar is an option for them, The Juice Lady’s Sugar Knockout is still worth a read to learn about the harmful effects of sugar, gain tasty new recipes and even just to learn how sugar may be affecting you, your health or behavior. I found it helpful to even see how dangerous artificial sweeteners can be and found it very interesting to see the effects sugar has on our bodies and how it does turn into an addition. While I don’t know that I will be giving up coffee any time soon, even for thirty days, I do think that The Juice Lady’s Sugar Knockout has made me more aware of what I put into my body.
