Spirit Rising, by Pastor Jim Cymbala of the Brooklyn Tabernacle, is sub-titled Tapping in to the Power of the Holy Spirit, and does a wonderful job of communicating what Cymbala means by it.
Spirit Rising is simple and explanatory enough for new Christians to understand (ie. Cymbala avoids or defines much of the Christian lingo that some Christian Living books can fall into at times), yet is in-depth and challenging enough to engage and encourage a seasoned Christian leader in his or her own relationship with the Father, Son, AND the Holy Spirit.
Throughout Spirit Rising, Cymbala uses many examples of the Holy Spirit’s work in his own life, as well as in the lives of other individuals in whom he has personally witnessed the Spirit’s work in their lives. It is one thing to write about what the Holy Spirit is like (influential, instructing, powerful, present…) and how we should be pursuing a relationship with him (communicating, fellowshipping, enjoying, experiencing…), but Cymbala gives his instruction life with these heartfelt and amazing illustrations that truly exemplify the interactions of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
With its many scriptural references to back up what is being taught, Spirit Rising is definitely a book worth reading again and again, and one that every Believer, regardless of denomination will gain from by reading and by living out what they have gleaned.
