It’s Pumpkin Day, Mouse! is a cute board book has two of the characters from the If You Give… book series, Mouse and Dog. Mouse has seven pumpkins on which to paint faces and on each page we see a new face being created. It’s rather cute to see Mouse have the same facial expression as each of the pumpkins as you turn the page.
Dog sneaks in and paints a scary face on one of the pumpkins while Mouse is busy with the others. Together they finish painting friendly faces on the pumpkins and have a beautiful lineup of painted pumpkins. Happy Pumpkin Day, Mouse!
For a child who is very young and still learning the basics of book handling and colors, this book would be okay. The parent can point out colors and color mixing to the child as they read the few words on the page. And I guess, for the most part, pointing out pictures is all that is important at that young age. However, I was quite disappointed when I received this book because I thought it would follow the same format as the If You Give… books. I thought there would be “If you give a mouse a pumpkin, he’ll want to….” and the story line would unfold into some crazy Halloween escapades by our friendly Mouse. When I showed it to my 2-year-old, she looked through it once and set it aside. It was still an okay book, but I was just disappointed that Laura Numeroff didn’t follow through with her standard format when it came to writing what could have been a great holiday edition of her series.
