Write a Comment – Win Any Item from Amazon!

[ 48 ] August 10, 2009 |

Running a blog is very rewarding, and ever since I started Luxury Reading in January, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with so many interesting people that I would have never known about otherwise. While writing posts is great fun, the aspect that I enjoy most about blogging is hearing from the readers who comment on these posts.

I’ve thought long and hard about what I can do to reward my loyal “commentors” and encourage new ones to participate in the discussions. My decision?

On the 10th of every month, I will give away a book of their choice to the most creative/prolific contributor to Luxury Reading!

Frequency of commenting counts, but so does the quality – a creative and relevant comment will get you more points than something like “sounds great”. Comments for giveaways count as well. Every month, I will pick a winner and post their name, as well as send them an e-mail. The winner can pick any item that is available on Amazon.com, and is $20 or less.

Since I posted this giveaway, I’ve gotten some questions from other bloggers asking if they could borrow the idea. My answer is that yes, you’re welcome to borrow the idea, but please give credit to LuxuryReading.com and provide a link back to this blog. Also, please comment below with a link to your post.

So get commenting!

I have a favorite used book store that I’ve been frequenting since 1980. Often I go in on my way to work and pick up a book or two but don’t bring in anything to trade. Recently my daughter-in-law came over to help me go through some accumulated boxes and we discovered a couple of hundred books to donate to the thrift store and at least another 100 that I can take in to trade. How in the world did I accumulate so many when I trade them in fairly often?

Do other people feel guilty if they just take a whole day or evening to read a book? When we are going on vacation whether by plane or automobile I always bring the books I’ve been dying to read. I measure how good a vacation it is by how many books I was able to read for example 3-4 books is a GOOD vacation. Yet when I am home I feel guilty reading a book as if I should be doing something else more productive. I recently joined a book club to lessen that guilt. When my son came home from college and excitedly asked me if I have any book recommendations for him I knew I should put aside guilt as I was seeing that my love of reading propelled all of my sons to be studious and excel in college.

Does anyone else have this problem? I find an author that I like and read every single book by that person, one right after the other. I don’t stop until I have either read every book I can find or occasionally the book will fall below my interest level. Then I’m off to search for another author. I wish I could be less obsessive about my reading.

Does it seem like no matter how much we intend to take time for ourselves and partake in our favorite hobby or past time other things and people get in the way? Every time I go on a vacation I start planning the book I’ll read. Whether it’s by plane or automobile i relish that time. A good vacation is one where several books get read. This past week on vacation I read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. It helped me to understand my father who was in Southeast Asia during WWII. He has been gone over 20 years and it made me miss him so much. He would have loved this book. He loved to read. I got that from him. Because it was so heavy I had to take a break and read Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul. This book made me miss my sister who have been gone 9 years -taken far too young from cancer. She loved Dogs. The trip ended with reading The Help. Reminded me of far too many white people I know and I am white. Actually missed the black characters when the book ended. They became like friends. Nothing like cozying up to a book

If you like hard-science sci-fi, check out the Ring or Charon by Roger MacBride Allen. The plot is about the after effects of a gravity experiment that had unintended consequences.

If fantasy is more to your liking, check out the Magister trilogy by C. S. Freidman.

Have you read “Saltwater Foodways” by Sandra Oliver? I met the author twice- fabulous, talented lady. This is the best historical cookbook in existance, and to my horror, I lost my beloved copy when we moved to our new home 3 months ago. I sincerely hope I win, I want my cookbook back!

    Hi, Vera
Terrific idea! I so enjoy getting your blog article each day in my email.
I have a blog about our art school for kids. It is: YEStudio In Action and I am in the process of trying to entice the students' parents to 'follow' and comment It's harder than you would think. I guess people are so busy these days.
I am now posting the 'Featured Artist of the Month' We'll see how that works. ;-)
I am an avid reader, have been all my life. My parents were also avid readers! It is such a pleasure, in my down time, to take my book and a cold glass of iced water to my recliner and get lost in my book! I also read myself to sleep every night.
My little granddaughter is a very good reader at the age of 10. It has helped her so much with her conversational skills. She is so sharp!
I have to read large print now. I wish I had always read large print; maybe my eyes would be better now.I am fortunate that our local library has a good large print section.
Thanks for what you do, Vera.

What a wonderfully great idea. You must be as passionate about books as I am, I am a book reviewer but yet cannot seem to ever have enough books to read. Reading a good book is like opening a portal to a world that we cannot otherwise enter. Reading a book broadens your horizons, can create wild nightmares and luxurious thoughts. To see a child reading a book is like a bright light on a dark day…what else can I say, I LOVE books!

I am now going to be a faithful follower and enjoy the battle of comments!
