Joel Manby is the president of Herschend Family Entertainment Corporation (HFE), and the author of Love Works. He uncovered a new trend that companies can focus on today to make a more positive work environment for the employees. This new approach promotes love in the workplace along with Christianity and Christian values. The book discusses what a person can do to give organizational leaders an edge with the seven timeless principles developed by Manby which promote effective leadership.
Manby experienced an epiphany after taping a reality television show called Undercover Boss with CBS. In the program, Manby pretended to work as a new prospective employee among the real employees of his company. He learned how people’s attitudes about their jobs at his company affected their productivity and the attitudes of others.
By going undercover at his own company HFE, Manby realized that he can make new changes to the corporate culture which will make the work environment more positive for the employees. The main change that he instituted for the company was to encourage his managers and supervisors to begin leading other employees with love.
Love Works focuses on seven basic principles: to be patient, be kind to others, trust employees to make the right decision, become an unselfish manager (or employee), always tell the truth, be more forgiving towards others and remain dedicated to your personal values. The chapters include bullet listings of initiatives, analysis tables, quizzes, notes, personal letters of the author, and black and white photos of the author from his past. It also includes stories of the mentors who have inspired him in the business over the years.
I really enjoyed the truly personal stories and heartfelt messages that were included in this book. Manby’s examples were of real people in real situations and showed the principles at work on a daily basis. The book is an inspiration to any company serious about wanting to make a change for the better.
