Insurgent is book two in Veronica Roth’s captivating Divergent series. In book one, Divergent, we were introduced to a world with five different factions and one brave girl, Beatrix — or Tris as she came to be known.
Insurgent picks up right where Divergent left off (so if you have not read book one, you will be crazy lost). At the end of book one we were left with one faction trying to wage war and overthrow all the other factions. Book two begins in the middle of the take-over, and the few Dauntless that are not accepting their new fate are rebelling against the new leaders and asking questions better left unasked. In book two we are thrown more into the love story between Tris and Four and characters are more fully developed.
Insurgent is a fast paced story that will leave you asking questions, wanting more, and eagerly awaiting book three (which sources tell me will be out later this year).
I love how this book picks up where book one ended — no time has passed which means no annoying three page summary of what book one was about (so again — if you have not read book one you will be completely lost). A true continuation. I also love how in depth the characters are written. I feel like I know each one. And Tris and Four’s love story seems real not mushy as most young adult fiction relationships are. There are arguments. Life is messy, and they have to stick up for one another — and they let each other down. . . they are real. As much as I loved the beginning, the ending . . . oh the ending. Can we say cliffhanger?! Cliffhangers are my favorite ways for books to end and Veronica Roth leaves a big one!
This particular version of Insurgent is the “collector’s edition” so there are fun extras included with the book — including a pivotal scene told from Four’s point of view, poster, faction tattoos, and “throw a party faction style” guides. I think the best part of the extras is the in-depth playlist that Roth includes. Each song is also explained and tells which scene in the book it goes with — a great addition to any book if you ask me!
Whether a fan or collector of Dystopian fiction, Veronica Roth’s Divergent series will be one that pleases.
