About the book
House of Earth, Woody Guthrie’s recently rediscovered novel, is now available in paperback.
The hardcover, released earlier this year, was chosen as the debut title in Johnny Depp’s new imprint at Harper, Infinitum Nihil. The novel, now out in paperback, includes the original introduction co-written by Depp and New York Times bestselling author Douglas Brinkley.
Guthrie completed the novel in 1947, but it was only recently rediscovered in his collection at the University of Tulsa. Since its publication, it has become a must-read for fans of American fiction – and Woody Guthrie. A meditation about marginalized people searching for love and meaning in a corrupt world, House of Earth is set in the arid Texas Panhandle during the Great Depression, but its themes are still relevant today. In the New York Review of Books, Larry McMurtry called the novel “powerful” and wrote, “Happily, many good things happened, and the book is finally with us.”
The Dallas Morning News called the novel “an invaluable addition to the literature of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, one with an eerie relevance in today’s America.”
