The Hoo Hoo Bear series by Amanda Kleback includes cute little books for children between the ages of about 3-7. The series begins with Hoo Hoo’s Song in which the teddy bear, Hoo Hoo, is called by the song in his heart to seek out the person who needs his comfort. He is matched up with Mrs.B., and we follow their little family though the rest of the series.

The illustrations in these books are not spectacular. They are mostly colored pencil drawings, many of which remind me of a coloring book or a child’s drawing, so I didn’t expect to be thrilled with the books themselves – yes, I am an illustrations snob! In this case, judging a book by its illustrations would mean missing out on some great content for preschool and elementary age kids.

Knock Knock, Hoo Hoo’s There! takes readers on an adventure with knights and princesses while touching on the subject of bullies.

Hoo Hoo Hoo! Merry Christmas! introduces children to the Polish Christmas tradition of Wigilia, fruit soup, and talking animals (my kiddos LOVED this one).

Don’t Get a Boo Boo, Hoo Hoo! is a great book to have on hand as a safety reference for parents and care takers to share with children. It helps parents to teach their kids about 9-1-1, a home fire escape route, and how to handle strangers while out and about or online, among many other great lessons.

Hoo is From Baltimore, Hon! features a wonderful tour of Baltimore and its attractions framed in the story of Mr. & Mrs. B showing Hoo Hoo around their “magical” hometown. It actually made me want to take the kids to Baltimore, a city I really don’t know much about. I was surprised to find so many great things to visit and enjoy! I hope that Kleback decides to add a few, perhaps less often explored, cities to this tour!

Forever thinking as the home-schooling mom that I am, Kleback’s Hoo Hoo Bear series makes a great addition to a civics study for little ones. The illustrations may not be up to par in my personal opinion, but my kids enjoyed them immensely, and the content was great! Did I mention the oh-so-soft-n-cuddly Christmas Hoo Hoo Bear plush toy that sings We Wish You a Merry Christmas? Even my hubby gave it a hug!

Rating: ★★★½☆
