The story of young Liam and his parents is one that is not easy to put down due to the powerful heartbreak experienced and told in his mother’s voice. Born with a Congenital Heart Disease, the very fact that Liam survived his first several months of life is an achievement. Before he was a year old, he underwent two dangerous open heart surgeries, with many more surgeries to follow.

And that was only the beginning.

While the author was still expecting her first child, she was advised to consider terminating her pregnancy after testing revealed a serious medical condition from which he may not survive. Termination was not something she and her husband chose to consider, but in making the difficult decision to bring a very sick child into the world, they experienced tremendous stress, sorrow and pain. They also formed wonderful friendships with other parents who have “heart” children, sharing challenges and joys as they navigated the complex health care system. As a result, the author found herself surrounded by others whose similar experiences offered reasons for tears and for joy.

Heart Warriors is a story of profound loss and love. For readers interested in exploring tough medical issues and decisions, this book will be a must-read. For those who have a member of the family with congenital heart disease, this story will pose questions, ideas and ways in which families can be supported through a difficult journey.
