Tara Duncan and the Forbidden Book picks right up where the first book left off. Rest assured, if you haven’t read the first one you won’t be lost with this one.

Tara wants nothing more than to be a typical thirteen year old. She wants to enjoy getting to know her mother whom she just rescued from Magister, stay out of trouble with her grandmother, spend time with her friends, and try to forget about the Magister and his evil plans for her. Unfortunately for Tara, that is not going to happen for a while.

This story finds Tara back in the OtherWorld with Cal, Robin, Fabrice, Fafnir, Sparrow, and Manitou (her grandfather who’s a dog) solving more problems and getting themselves in some trouble with Master Chem (their dragon instructor). Some of the problems include curing Cal from a time release poison, heading back into Limbo (home of demons), saving OtherWorld from the Devourer of Souls, and even working together with Magister. Someone is once again trying to kill Tara from inside of Lancovit (human kingdom), and the Empress of Osmois now knows that Tara is the descendant of Osmois (to Tara’s dismay).

Throughout this story, Tara learns to better harness her power and discovers how powerful she really is. We are able to see her grow as a character and although she does make some typical teenage mistakes, for the most part she makes the right choices when it comes to helping her friends and people of OtherWorld. Tara’s friends are also tested but always come to her aid, to the dismay of the Magister, who doesn’t understand why Tara’s friends like her for her and not just for her power. We are able to see another side of the Magister in this story, although he is still Tara’s nemesis. Tara Duncan and the Forbidden Book reunites us with the Bloodgraves, vampyrs, Mud Eaters, and a host of other unique characters.

Overall I enjoyed reading this story and couldn’t put it down. I thought it flowed nicely, kept my attention throughout and of course, left me hanging for the next installment. I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes magic, friendship, and mystery.
