Lucy Streeter always plays by the rules, never taking any risks or chances. As a single mother, she feels she has to. She cannot fail her son, her struggling business or her father. She designs exquisite clothing that she is not brave enough to wear and dreams of relationships that will never be.

Lucy attends a party and meets Micah – a fortune teller who is new in town. Micah is predicting things for all of her friends and Lucy is infuriated when he tells her best friend Tamasin that she is pregnant. Tam had just finally quit trying to have another child after years of fertility treatments, disappointments and attempting anything and everything that she heard of to aid her in conceiving a child.

The morning after the party, Lucy is still steaming with anger and she hunts down Micah to confront him about the harm she feels he has caused Tam. He assures Lucy that Tam is, in fact, pregnant and along the way reveals to Lucy that her future is not nearly so promising and that she will die on Friday.

Lucy doesn’t believe a word of it until one by one all of the predictions Micah has made begin coming true – even Tam’s pregnancy. Suddenly, Lucy feels the need to live her life and take all the chances she has been avoiding for so long. With her new haircut, tattoo, clothing and attitude, Lucy begins to truly enjoy her life for the first time. She even, drunkenly, admits to her best guy friend, Richard, that she is in love with him and has been for a very long time.

Famous Last Words is an interesting read although it alternates between sections that move at a snail’s pace and others that are more intense and action packed. I enjoyed the story, but all the characters remained distant and I never truly felt that I knew or related to them. On an up note, this kept me from foreshadowing the story line.
