Like many young Americans, Jonathan Safran Foer spent much of his teenage and college years oscillating between enthusiastic carnivore and occasional vegetarian. As he became a husband, and then a father, the moral dimensions of eating became increasingly important to him. Faced with the prospect of being unable to explain why we eat some animals and not others, Foer set out to explore the origins of many eating traditions and the fictions involved with creating them.
Traveling to the darkest corners of our dining habits, Foer raises the unspoken question behind every fish we eat, every chicken we fry, and every burger we grill. Part memoir and part investigative report, Eating Animals is a book that, in the words of the Los Angeles Times, places Jonathan Safran Foer “at the table with our greatest philosophers.”

I must have missed this one! Sounds like a great one to read. Having been a lacto ova vegeatarian for 18 years, I find it very interesting as to how people react when we eat together at a restaurant. Some people accept it right off and we move on to other subjects and then there are some who are offended when you don’t eat meat! I accidently went to a doctor who was totally against vegetarianism.
My husband doesn’t eat meat because of relgious reasons, my reasons are that I think about the animals being eaten. At the time that I was changing to vegetarianism, I was eating a juicy hamburger. While I was eating, I started to think of cow and I couldn’t finish eating.

This is a very gifted writer.
Sounds like a fascinating exploration of our eating habits as North Americans; especially in this day and age where our food is pumped full of pesticides, steroids, etc. and our media always has a recall. A good way to understand what we put in our mouths and why. Thanks!

This sounds like a very interesting book, the kind of nonfiction I enjoy reading. I’m glad I stumbled on your giveaway.

I am not interested in winning this book so do not include my name in your drawing; however, I wanted to make a comment about eating. I find it interesting that as time goes on even people that supposedly are experts on diet even disagree. The book stores have complete sections on diet books and another section on cook books. What was good food yesterday will be something that you shouldn’t eat tomorrow because some expert will tell you that if you eat enough of it you will die. I have read several of Foer’s short stories and find his writing style to be one that I really like, but I am not ready to find out why some people are vegetarian and others are not. I may have vegetable soup for lunch and big slice of Salmon for dinner and enjoy every bite.
