For those who love to cook and try new things, Coconut 24/7 by Pat Crocker is an excellent cookbook full of tasty and unique food, drink and skincare concoctions. Included are over 100 recipes which all use at least one coconut-based ingredient. Focusing on the health benefits of coconut, the author does an excellent job of describing all the different coconut derived products available and the advantage (or disadvantages) of each one.

Over the last few years, our family has switched over to coconut oil as one of our main cooking fats, but I really enjoyed learning about the health benefits of other coconut ingredients. Besides coconut meat, she discusses coconut water, oil, cream, vinegar, sugar, nectar, milk, flour and more. Many of her recipes have a distinctly Polynesian flair, but I so appreciated that most of the ingredients she chose to use are quite common in American supermarkets or farmers markets. The only thing I found challenging was the spice combinations. Many of her recipes call for spice mixtures (recipes included) but the ingredients for those blends are numerous and perhaps less common. None the less, I was able to substitute for what I didn’t have and the recipe we tried for dinner turned out great. The skincare recipes look easy to make and most only require a few ingredients.

This cookbook would be a welcome addition to anyone who enjoys cooking healthy, fresh foods combined with unique bold flavors. There are a wide variety of recipes that appeal to various diet restrictions. Regardless of whether one is Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten-Free, or Paleo, there are many great recipe options. Recipes can also be easily tweaked to fit various allergies and restrictions. Because of the very unique flavors and texture combinations, this cookbook is not child friendly overall unless you use it as a way to expose them to new culinary experiences, which is what I plan to do. All in all though, this cookbook has wide appeal to anyone who enjoys experimenting and cooking with whole fresh foods…especially coconut.
