Last Call by JD Seamus | The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan | The Forgotten Legion by Ben Kane
Just one huh? I have three that tie: Last Call by JD Seamus, The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan and The Forgotten Legion by Ben Kane. Last Call was a bit of fun, The Gathering Storm was where the Wheel of Time series got a new life, but The Forgotten Legion was really awesome, a realistic feeling trip back to ancient Rome. It follows the life of several ordinary people from the time and makes you understand what it was really like living then.

December 24, 2011 Selection – from Amanda Schafer
Her Mother’s Hope by Francine Rivers
My favorite book that I’ve reviewed so far has been Her Mother’s Hope by Francine Rivers. First, I just love Francine Rivers and own all of her books; I could reread any of her books at any point in time. But more than that, Her Mother’s Hope was part of a series that shared a great deal about Francine’s own family history. There were struggles within that 2-book set that practically all of us will face within our own families at some point and it was a truly moving story to read.

December 23, 2011 Selection – from Mac Maccaskill
The Creed of Violence by Boston Teran
The Creed of Violence, by Boston Teran, made my list of favorite reads for 2010. Teran writes with a literary grace that echoes some of the greats, full of beautifully simple yet powerful language. And the story packs a punch, too, mixing elements of political intrigue with more personal tales of loss and regret. The result is a deeply satisfying and timely read.

December 22, 2011 Selection – from Vera Pereskokova
A Thousand Lives by Julia Scheeres
Despite its macabre topic, I’ve read few books that have fascinated me as much as A Thousand Lives. Prior to reading the book, I could not imagine how anyone could force nearly a 1000 people to commit suicide, unless they were willing participants. After learning about the individual members of the Peoples’ Temple and the control Jones exuded over his followers, I can understand how most of them so no other option.

December 21, 2011 Selection – from Shannon Hopkins
Downward Dog, Upward Fog by Meryl Davids Landau
When I read this book, it was like Meryl was speaking directly to me. Everybody goes through the existential questioning phase that Lorna finds herself in, and while there are supportive people to help you find your way there will also always be challenges in events and people. The important thing is to not give up and to truly believe in your ability to change your own life for the better. Since reading Downward Dog, Upward Fog I’ve started talking to Meryl on Twitter and following her yoga posts on The Elephant – great material!

December 20, 2011 Selection – from Alysia George
Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos
I chose Falling Together by Marisa de los Santos because it is full of really beautiful language. Usually I don’t appreciate terribly descriptive text, but in this piece it brought the story to life for me and inspired me to be a better writer myself.

Sarabeth’s Bakery by Sarabeth Levine
Sarabeth’s Bakery is one of my most treasured baking books. You can tell from the writing that she really and truly loves to bake, and explains her techniques in such a way that you will too. Great writing and gorgeous photos make this book an absolute standout.

December 18, 2011 Selection – from Jennifer Jensen
Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs
I was a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Sweet Venom reminded me so much of it. Childs writes from three separate points of view; each of the girls had a very unique voice. I also adore that she writes a modern spin on Greek mythology. I would definitely read this one again and again!
