Vicky does not expect a dead body when she hosts an open house. When Vicky finds her boss decidedly dead, she doesn’t know what happened or what to do. To make matters worse, he is completely naked. Vicky thinks that she can hand the case off to Detective Nick Carson, but it isn’t that easy. The murderer believes that Vicky retains a piece of evidence that could put him/her behind bars. It soon becomes apparent that Vicky is not safe and that the handsome Detective must help her out of her muddle. With more than a little romance, a bunch of hilarious scenes and a lot of sleuthing time, Vicky tries to solve the murder.
Vicky is a terrific main character. The reader will likely find her hilarious and laugh at her attempts to make sense of the sudden chaos that has taken over her life. Thought she is afraid that the murderer intends to kill her, Vicky uses her brain and bravery to push through with the case. She is a very memorable character and will stick with the reader long after the book has come to an end. Nick Carson adds the romance element to the story. He is everything the reader would imagine a dashing Detective to be: handsome, charismatic, and determined to help Vicky! He seemed a little like he was Vicky’s male foil. The other characters are “filler characters,” providing background information and extra humor where necessary. The author builds up the characters quite well considering that the story itself is not that long.
The plot isn’t the most “novel,” however; the pages are filled with wit and suspense. There are a few lags in the murder mystery here and there, but nothing that would make the reader put Back on the Market down. The writing is fluid and easy to understand; at times, it felt like some words were over-used, but the dialogue was mostly snappy and enjoyable. The characters will keep the reader laughing throughout much of the book. The romance wasn’t overdone; the author kept it sweet and light-hearted. The ending wasn’t unpredictable, but very satisfying nonetheless. This book would be great for adult readers who enjoy a touch of romance with their mystery.
