Amy Inspired is the story of Amy Gallagher. She is a thirty something with a master’s degree, working as an adjunct professor at a local college. A profession which she is not sure she loves. She gave up her steady, great paying job to take the lesser paying professor position all for the sake of her true passion – writing. A passion she is not sure she is cut out for. Discouraged by the pile of rejections (from publishers and men), she wonders if she is even on the right path in life.
Enter mysterious, gorgeous, fun loving, but completely unavailable Eli. Down on his luck, he moves in with Amy and her best friend/roommate, Zoe. Although at first Amy is a little put out with having a male boarder living on her her couch, things take an interesting twist when she realizes that she wants more then just a friendship with Eli. Through a series of misfortunes, both Eli and Zoe move out, and Amy is forced to examine the path her life is on and make the hard decisions about where she wants life to take her.
I was a little apprehensive when I started Amy Inspired as all the reviews I have read (or skimmed over rather) only gave this book 3-4 stars. I do have to say that I was not disappointed. I love reading novels whose main characters are English professors and/or writers (and our heroine is both). I love stepping into their lives through the pages of the books that I read.
Bethany Pierce’s characters were life-like and I was slightly sad when it was time to say goodbye. I enjoyed reading about the struggles that Amy had – both in “real life” and her “writing life”. It is nice to read about a character who is not perfect. A character who sits to down to write only to be smashed with a bad case of writer’s block. It was fun to see the different methods that Amy used to over come her writer’s block and finally write a piece she was proud of.
It was also very enjoyable to follow Amy and Eli’s relationship. They are two people who are complete opposites, who have fights that make you want to run for cover and still have the “ahhh” moments that everyone just loves reading.
Amy Inspired is a fun, easy going novel. Bethany Pierce’s debut is sure to be the perfect beach or poolside read this summer.
